How to tamp and trim the dose

Precision is essential for creating the perfect cup of third wave coffee. In this video, follow along as a professional barista demonstrates how to tamp and trim the dose of ground coffee with expert precision so you get the exact right amount every time. First, we show you how to tamp the ground coffee. This step ensures the water spends a consistent amount of time capturing the full flavor of the ground beans. Once the ground coffee fills the filter basket, insert the broad end of the tamper atop the grounds and press firmly. The top edge of the tamper’s metal cap should be level with the edge of the filter basket. This compacts the ground coffee to form the “puck.” Now it’s time to trim the dose. Insert the razor trimming tool into the filter basket, resting the “shoulders” of the tool on the edge of the filter basket. Turn the razor tool both clockwise and counterclockwise to remove excess grounds. When you tamp and trim the dose precisely like this, you can brew the perfect cup of coffee day after day.
