Setting up your machine

Adjusting the grind size of your roasted coffee beans is critical for creating the perfect cup of third wave specialty coffee to suit your taste. Hot water flows over the ground coffee to extract the flavorful espresso—the larger the individual coffee grounds, the faster the water flows. If the taste is too sour, that means the espresso is under-extracted and you should grind the beans more finely. When the beans are ground more finely, the water flows through the coffee grounds more slowly for a richer flavor. Professional baristas call adjusting the grind setting to achieve the ideal extraction “dialing in.” Breville's Barista Pro™ makes this process simple with its grind dial that includes 30 grind settings . We recommend starting with setting 15 and adjusting the grind finer or coarser from there depending on your preference. The grind dial is in the center. Simply turn the dial clockwise to adjust the grind finer, and turn it counterclockwise to grind the beans more coarsely. Watch our espresso extraction tutorial here to learn to gauge the grind size by the time it takes to extract the espresso.
